A motorboat moves at a steady speed of 4 ms⁻¹. The water resistance acting on it is 4000 N. Calculate the power of its engine. Ans. (16 kW)

Given:

Speed of the Motorboat = = 4 m s⁻¹
Water resistance Force on boat = F =  4000 N

To Find:

Power of the boat engine = P = ?  Watt

Solution:

As Power is defined as the rate of doing work. So,

P`\frac {W}{t}`

P = `\frac {F xS}{t}`

or

P = F x `\frac {S}{t}`   (∴ speed = v`\frac {S}{t}` )

or

P = F x v

by putting values

P = 4000 N x 4 m s⁻¹

P =  16000 N m s⁻¹

or

P =  16000 W

or

P =  16 kW

Thus the power of the engine is 16 kW
