A picture frame is hanging by two vertical strings. The tensions in the strings are 3.8 N and 4.4 N. Find the weight of the picture frame.  Ans. (8.2 N)

Given:

Tension in the 1st string  = `\T_1`=   3.8 N
Tension in the 2nd string  = `\T_2` =   4.4 N

To Find:

Weight of  the frame = W = ? N

Solution:

According to the 1st condition of Equilibrium

Σ F = 0

In this numerical three forces are acting. One is downward (i.e. the weight of the frame) and two are  upwards (i.e. the tension in both strings) So, according to 1st condition we have

Sum of the downwards forces = Sum of the upwards forces

weight of the frame (W) = `\T_1``\T_2`

by putting values

W3.8 N + 4.4 N

W = 8.2 N
thus the weight of the frame is 8.2 N
