A sample of certain radioactive elements has a half-life of 1500 years. If it has an activity of 32000 counts per hour at the present time then plot a graph of the activity of this sample over the period in which it will reduce to 1/16 of its present value.
Data Given:
Half-life of radioactive element = T₁/₂ = 1500 years
Initial count rate = 32000 counts per hour`\frac{1}{16}`th of the activity = `\frac{32000}{16}` = 2000
To Find:
Solution:
Initial count rate = 32000 counts per hour
Final count rate after 4 half-lives = 2000 counts per hour
According to the above conditions, we have the below table of data
Count rate per minute | 32000 | ||||
0 |
Scale :
Along X-Axis : One big division = 1500 years
Along y-Axis : One big division = 8000 counts per hour
The required Graph according to the given data is below
