How much ice will melt by 50000 J of heat? Latent heat of fusion of ice = 336000 J kg⁻¹. Ans. (150 g)

Given:

Heat supplied for ice to melt = Q = 50,000 J
Latent heat of fusion of ice  = Hf  = 336,000 J kg⁻¹

To Find:

Mass of ice to melt  = m  = ?

Solution:

The formula for Latent heat of fusion is

Q = m Hf

or

m = `\frac {Q}{Hf}`

by putting values

m = `\frac {50000 J}{336000 J kg⁻¹}`

m =0.148809 Kg

or

m =148.809 g

m =150 g

Thus, the mass of the ice  to be melted is 150 grams
