If 280 J of work is done in carrying a charge of 2 C from a place where the potential is -12 V to another place where the potential is V, calculate the value of V. (Answer 128 V)
Given:
Work done = W = 280 J
Charge = q = 2 C
Let given Potential = V' = -12 V
To Find:
Potential at another place = V = ?
Solution:
We know that ΔV = `\frac {W}{q}`
where ΔV = V - V'
So,
V - V' = `\frac {W}{q}`
or
V = `\frac {W}{q}` + V'
putting values
V = `\frac {280 J}{2 C}` + (-12 V)
V = `\frac {280 J}{2 C}` + (-12 V)
V = 140 J/C -12 V
V = 128 V ----------------Ans.
