A carbon electrode has a resistance of 0.125 Ω at 20 C°.  The temperature co-efficient of carbon is -0.0005 at 20 C°. What will be the resistance of the electrode at 85 C°? Answer (0.12 Ω )

Given:

Resistance of the Carbon electrode at 20°C =  R₀ = 0.125 Ω

Temperature = T₀ = 20 °C

Temperature Coefficient of Resistance = ∝ = -0.0005

Temperature = T = 85 °C

To Find:

Resistance at (T = 85 °C) = R = ?

Solution:

The formula for finding Resistance at any temperature T is given by:

R = R₀ ( 1 + ∝ (T - T₀))

putting values

R = 0.125 Ω ( 1 + (-0.0005)(85 °C - 20 °C))

R = 0.125 Ω ( 1 + -0.0005 (65 °C))

R = 0.125 Ω ( 1 -0.0325 °C)

R = 0.125 Ω ( 0.9675 °C)

R = 0.121 Ω  -----------------Ans.
