A resistor of 50 Ω has a P. D. of 100 V, D.C. across 1 hour. Calculate (a). Power and (b). Energy. Answer ( (a) 200W, (b) 0.72 MJ )
Given:
Resistance of resister = R = 50 Ω
Potential Difference = V = 100 V
Time duration = Δt = 1 hour = 60 x 60 s =3600 s
To Find:
Power = P = ?
Energy = E = ?
Solution:
The formula for power according to given quantities is
P = `\frac {V^2}{R}`
by putting values
P = `\frac {(100 V)^2}{50 Ω}`
P = `\frac {(10,000 V^2}{50 Ω}`
P = 200 W ---------------Ans. (1)
---------------------------------------
To find E we know that
E = P x t
putting values
E = 200 w x3600 s
E = 720,000 J
or
E = 7.2 x 10⁻⁵ J
or
E = 0.72 x 10⁻⁶ J
or
E = 0.72 MJ -------------------Ans. (2)
