In a ripple tank 500 waves passes through a certain point in 10 s, if the speed of the wave is 3.5 m s⁻¹, then find the wavelength of the waves. (7 cm.)

Given:

Number of waves passes = N = 500 Waves
Time taken = t = 10 s, So
Frequency of waves = f = `\frac{N}{t}`  = `\frac{500}{10 s}` = 50 Hz
Velocity of wave = v = 3.5 m s⁻¹

To Find:

Wavelength of wave = λ = ?

Solution:

The general relation among wavelength (λ), speed (v), and frequency (f) is following:

v = f λ

or

λ = `\frac{v}{f}`

putting values

λ = `\frac{3.5 m s⁻¹}{50 Hz}`

λ = `\frac{3.5 m s⁻¹}{50 s⁻¹}`       ∴[s⁻¹ = Hz}

λ = 0.7 m ----------- Ans.
