A 1000 kg car traveling with a speed of 144 km h⁻¹ rounds a curve of radius 100 m. Find the necessary centripetal force. (Ans: 1.6 x10⁴ N)
Data Given:
Mass of car = m = 1000 kg
Speed of car = v = 144 km h⁻¹ = 40 m s⁻¹
Radius of curve = r = 100 m
To Find:
Centripetal Force = F = ?
Solution:
Formula for Centripetal Force F is given by
F = `\frac {mv²}{r}`
By putting values
F = `\frac {1000 kg x(40 m s⁻¹)²}{100 m}`
F = `\frac {1000 kg x1600 m² s⁻²}{100 m}`
F = `\frac {1600000 kg m² s⁻²}{100 m}`
F = 16000 kg m s⁻²
or
F = 1.6 x10⁴ N --------------Ans.
