In a double slit experiment the second order maximum occurs at θ = 0.25°. The wavelength is 650 nm. Determine the slit separation. (Ans: 0.3 mm)
Data Given:
Order (2nd Maximum) = m = 2
Wavelength of light = λ = 650 nm = 650 x 10⁻⁹ m = 6.50 x 10⁻⁷ m
Angle θ = 0.25°
To Find:
Separation between the slits = d = ?
Solution:
Formula for `m^{th}` maxima we have
d sin θ = m λ
or
d = `\frac {m λ}{sin θ}`
putting the corresponding values
d = `\frac {2 x 6.50 x 10⁻⁷ m}{sin 0.25°}`
d = `\frac {13 x 10⁻⁷ m}{0.0044}`
d = 2954.545 x 10⁻⁷ m
or
d = 0.295 x 10⁻³ m
or
d = 0.3 mm --------------Ans.
