What are the pitch and least count of

a. Vernier calipers if the smallest division on the main scale is 1mm and total divisions on the vernier scale are 20?

b. Screw gauge if the smallest division on its main scale is 0.5 mm and its movable scale has 50 divisions.

Ans { 25 x10 km }

Solution:

Part-(a)

Vernier calipers have NO pitch because they do not have any rotating screws.

Now for Leastcount, we know that

Least Count  =    `\ frac {1 mm}{20}`

Least Count =    0.05 mm ------------Ans.1

Part-(b)

The pitch of the screw gauge is the distance traveled by the circular scale on the linear (or main) scale in one rotation. Here the given 0.5 mm is the pith of the screw gauge.

Now for Leastcount we know that

Least Count  =    `\ frac {0.5 mm}{50}`

Least Count =    0.01 mm ------------Ans.2
