Look at the measurement of the Vernier caliper (as shown):

a. What is its main scale reading?

b. What is its coinciding division on the Vernier scale?

c. Calculate the total reading on the Vernier caliper suppose?

Ans { (a) 2.5 cm, (b) 3, (c) 2.53 cm}

Solution:

Part-(a) Main scale reading:

The main scale reading is 2.5 cm ----------Ans.1

Part-(b) Coinciding division on Vernier scale:

The Vernier scale coinciding division is 3 ----------Ans.2

Part-(c) Total reading:

From the figure, 0.1 cm is the smallest division on the main sale and 10 is the total number of divisions on the Vernier scale. thus

Least Count  =    `\ frac {0.1 cm}{10}`

Least Count =    0.01 cm

Total reading = Main scale reading + Vernier scale Coinciding division x least count.

Total reading = 2.5 cm + 3 x 0.01 cm

Total reading = 2.53 cm  -----------Ans. 3
