Look at the figure of the screw gauge, let's suppose a small steel ball is placed between its spindle and anvil then:

a. What is its main scale reading?

b. What is its coinciding division of circular scale?

c. Calculate the total diameter of the ball.

Ans { (a) 6.5 mm, (b) 46, (c) 6.96 mm}

Solution:

Part-(a) Main scale reading:

The main scale reading is 6.5 cm ----------Ans.1

Part-(b) Coinciding division of Circular scale:

The coinciding division is 46 ----------Ans.2

Part-(c) Total diameter of the ball:

The pitch of the screw gauge is the distance traveled by the circular scale on the linear (or main) scale in one rotation. From the figure, 0.5 mm is the pith of the screw gauge and 50 is the total number of divisions on a circular scale.

The least count of screw gauge formula is.

Least Count  =    `\ frac {0.5 mm}{50}`

Least Count =    0.01 mm

Total reading = Main scale reading + Circular scale Coinciding division x least count.

Total reading = 6.5 mm + 46 x 0.01 mm

Total reading = 6.96 mm  -----------Ans. 3
