Preposition:

A word that is usually used to show the relationship between a Noun or pronoun with everything else in the sentence is known as a preposition.

A preposition is a word used to link nouns, pronouns, or phrases to other words within a sentence. Prepositions are usually short words, and they are normally placed directly in front of nouns. In some cases, you'll find prepositions in front of gerund verbs.

Note: A preposition is either followed by a noun or a pronoun.


Examples:

1. I prefer to read in the library.

2. He swam across the pool.

3. He climbed up the ladder to get into the attic.



Kinds of Prepositions:

Prepositions are of five different kinds:

1. Simple prepositions.

2. Compound prepositions

3. Double preposition

4. Participle prepositions

5. Phrase prepositions



1. Simple Prepositions:

Simple prepositions are words like in, on, at, about, over, under, off, of, for, to, etc.


Examples:

1. She sat on the sofa.

2. He fell off the ladder.

3. She is about seven.

4. He is going to the market.

5. There is some water in the bottle.

6. They sat around the table.

2. Compound prepositions:

Compound prepositions are words like without, within, inside, outside, into, beneath, below, behind, between, etc.


Examples:

1. He fell into the river.

2. He sat beside her

3. The teacher stood behind the desk.

4. She sat between her kids.

5. There is nothing inside the jar.

6. The boy ran across the road.



3. Double prepositions:

Double prepositions are words like outside of, out of, from behind, from beneath, etc.


Examples:

1. Suddenly he emerged from behind the curtain.

2. He walked out of the compound.



4. Participle prepositions:

Participle prepositions are words like concerning, notwithstanding, pending, considering, etc


Examples:

1. There was little chance of success, notwithstanding they decided to go ahead.

2. You did the job well, considering your age and inexperience.



5. Phrase prepositions:

Phrase prepositions are phrases like because of, by means of, with regard to, on behalf of, instead of, on account of, in opposition to, for the sake of, etc.


Examples:

1. I am standing here on behalf of my friends and colleagues.

2. The match was canceled because of the rain.

3. He succeeded by means of perseverance.
