A light year is the distance light travels in one year. How many metres are there in one light year: (speed of light = 3.0 x 10⁸ms⁻¹). (Ans: 9.5 x 10¹⁵m)
Given:
Time = t = 1 year
Speed of light = v = 3 x 10⁸ ms⁻¹
To find:
Distance (Light Years) = S = ?
Solution:
First, we will convert year to seconds (SI unit Conversion). So,
We know that
1 year = 24 hours
1 day = 24 hours
1 hour = 60 minutes
1 minute = 60 seconds
So,
t = 1 year = 365 x 24 x 60 x 60 s
t = 31536000 s
t = 3.154 x 10⁷s
Now using the formula among Distance (S), Speed (v), and time (t)
S = vt
by putting the values we have
S = 3 x 10⁸ ms⁻¹ x 3.154 x 10⁷s
S = (3 x 3.154) x 10⁸⁺⁷ m
S = 9.4608 x 10¹⁵ m
S = 9.5 x 10¹⁵ m --------Ans
