Q. Show that the prefix micro is a thousand times greater than the prefix nano. 


Answer:


We know that

1 micro (µ) = 10⁻⁶ ----------(1)
and
1 nano (n) = 10⁻⁹ ------------(2)

In order to get the desire relation b/w micro (10⁻⁶) and nano (10⁻⁹), We will multiply the Eqn (1) R.H.S. by 10⁻³ ｘ 10³

1 micro (µ) = 10⁻⁶ ｘ 10⁻³ ｘ 10³   [∴ 10⁻³ ｘ 10⁺³ = 1]

1 micro (µ) = 10⁻⁶⁻³ ｘ 10³

1 micro (µ) = 10⁻⁹ ｘ 10³

1 micro (µ) =  10³ｘ 10⁻⁹

1 micro (µ) =  10³ nano (n)       (∴ 10⁻⁹ = n)

or

1 micro (µ) =  1000 nano (n)

This shows that micro is 1000 times greater than nao or we can say also that nano is 1000 times smaller than micro.
